The Three B’s: Bowling, Birthday and BBQ

September 14, 2017 by Lindsay Ingalls 3 Comments

We have made it a tradition that on each of our children’s birthdays we will do a new activity or visit somewhere new. This year for Alder’s birthday we started our morning with coffee and pastries at Jet Black Coffee. Then it was on to the Circuit Bouldering gym for a quick climbing session before heading to our main event – bowling at Punch Bowl Social.

Neil and I had visited Punch Bowl Social last year on a date night but our visit was quick and we had no idea that it had three bowling areas, tons of games and karaoke rooms as well as some really delicious food. We were all pretty excited to spend the afternoon bowling and eating especially since this was the first time Edith and Alder had ever been bowling.

We opted to eat at our lane because there was no way we were going to get the kids to sit down and eat when they knew that bowling was just a few feet away. So we ordered our food and drinks and after we convincing Alder that the lightest ball would be best for him even though it was blue (his favorite colour at the moment) we got down to bowling.

One thing that I love about Punch Bowl Social bowling is that it’s by the hour versus by the game. This means we can bowl as many games as we can in our allotted time and we aren’t paying for each string. With two kids however we were lucky to make it through one game but either way still fun. I will note however if you are into some competitive bowling these lanes are not PBA approved but are just for gathering with friends for a fun time.

Not interested in bowling? Don’t worry Punch Bowl Social is worth visiting for the food alone. All the food is made in house and is not the normal greasy, heated up food you find at most bowling alleys. This food is top notch and so are the drinks. I am still dreaming about the Superfood Grain Bowl it was legitimately one of the best things I ate all summer.

The Superfood Grain Bowl has crispy farro (something I need to learn how to make), a bunch of great veggies and an incredible miso ginger vinaigrette. We also ordered the Black Eyed Pea Hummus which was was another amazing dish and we ordered the Boiled Peanuts which I was a bit skeptical about and the first few were hard to get down but the more I ate the more I liked them and even our five-year-old, Edith, couldn’t get enough. For drinks we went with a few of their homemade sodas which were all delicious but my favorite was the Season’s Soda.

After we finished up bowling we headed home to get ready for our mini birthday BBQ with friends. Since we had a big morning out we kept it simple with homemade slaw, chips, store bought cake (Whole Foods has the best vegan chocolate cake BTW) and veggie dogs.

We kept our veggie dogs super simple with just a bit of Sir Kensigton mustard and ketchup but this weekend we will be jazzing up our dogs and I just might have a recipe or two to share with you next week.

What birthday traditions do you have? What is your favorite birthday memory? I have to say birthdays for me are kind of a sore subject. I love celebrating others birthdays but I find that for some reason mine just never seems to be great. Oh well. I do have a great memory though when I was 13 or 14 my parents took me and a few friends to New Hampshire to go shopping and stay in a hotel.

twenty-seven. goals.

August 28, 2012 by Lindsay Ingalls 4 Comments

Today I turn 27.

August 2011

I just looked back at my goals for my 26th year (first time since I wrote them -whoops) and I certainly didn’t accomplish most of them.

My goals for my 26th year were:
  • Attend one blogger conference (Fitbloggin, Healthy Living Summit, ect.). <– had a baby instead
  • Attend one health coaching conference/event. <– attended half of one but had to fly home because Neil hit his head
  • Eat out no more than once per week. <– did pretty well with this although we certainly had a few weeks off and on that we ate out more than once (vacations were the exception)
  • Run a 10k. <– had a baby instead
  • Run a 1/2 Marathon. <– had a baby instead
  • Write one new e-book. <– slacked on this.
  • Read 10 new books. <– accomplished
  • Do yoga at least once per week. <–in Sept, Oct and Nov I did this and then starting at 18 weeks through my pregnancy
  • Commit to daily blogging with high quality posts. <– maybe not daily but improved quality of post (work in progress)
  • Improve my blog (quality of posts, photos, layout, appearance) <– made improvements but work in progress
  • Find time each week to unplug (literally) <– yoga was my time for this
  • Work on improving my time management. <–done but now needing to rework it with the new baby

August 2012

Okay as per tradition lets look at my goals for my 27th year:

  • Run a 10k.
  • Run a 5k.
  • Give Running With Tongs as facelift.
  • Work on improving my health coaching business and getting re-focused.
  • Move into a new home that we love.
  • Read 5 new books (I have a baby now so setting my expectations a little lower).
  • Write a new e-book (for real).

The Calm Before The Storm

August 28, 2011 by Lindsay Ingalls 1 Comment

Our Philadelphia trip was canceled due to the hurricane so the Hubz and I decided to take a mini day trip that turned into an overnight trip to Manchester VT and Northampton MA. We started our trip with a little outlet shopping in Manchester and lunch at The Spiral Press Cafe. Lunch was good but the wrap really needed a vinaigrette or simply a little salt and pepper.

Iced Coffee and Avocado Hummus Wrap

After lunch we decided to extended our adventure and head a few more hours south to Northampton MA. Northampton is one of my favorite spots to wonder, shop and enjoy a beer.

After wondering around Northampton we stopped into Target to pick up bathing suites (i.e. gym clothes we can wear into the pool) and then checked into the hotel. We decided to get in a quick pool workout since we didn’t pack running clothes for our spontaneous trip. After a hard pool workout we got dressed and headed out to dinner at Fresh Side in Amherst.

After a beautiful weekend that took us through Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire we are experiencing extreme devastation thanks to Irene.

Beautiful Weather Friday and Saturday

I’ve spent my birthday inside flipping between episodes of Gilmore Girls and the news while following saddening tweets about the destruction throughout Vermont:

I hope that everyone affected by the hurricane/tropical storm are staying safe.

Goals for my 26th Year

August 28, 2011 by Lindsay Ingalls 7 Comments
Today marks the start of my 26th year and just like last year I have set goals for my 26th year.  Instead of doing 26 in my 26 I decided to focus on things that I am either not doing right now or things that will improve my quality of life, my health coaching and my blogging careers.
My goals for my 26th year are:
  • Attend one blogger conference (Fitbloggin, Healthy Living Summit, ect.).
  • Attend one health coaching conference/event.
  • Eat out no more than once per week.
  • Run a 10k.
  • Run a 1/2 Marathon.
  • Write one new e-book.
  • Read 10 new books.
  • Do yoga at least once per week.
  • Commit to daily blogging with high quality posts.
  • Improve my blog (quality of posts, photos, layout, appearance)
  • Find time each week to unplug (literally)
  • Work on improving my time management.
Do you set goals? How do you keep yourself on track?

1/2 Way There

February 28, 2011 by Lindsay Ingalls 3 Comments

Today is my half birthday which means only 6 more months until my 26th Birthday.  This got me thinking about that list I made back in August my 25 Things for my 25th Year and I decided it was time to check in and re-evaluate what I set out to do.

  1. Run a 5K
  2. Try Bikram Yoga
  3. Do an overnight hike on the Long Trail
  4. Visit Montreal (again) probably not going to happen so crossing this off
  5. Visit Ottawa (again; first time ever with Hubz)probably not going to happen so crossing this off
  6. Visit Toronto (again; missing my bff) probably not going to happen so crossing this off
  7. Visit Key West because the Hubz probably not going to happen so crossing this off
  8. Visit Chicago- a place the Hubz and I have both never been probably not going to happen so crossing this off
  9. Attend the Healthy Living Summit
  10. Start my Health Counseling Business This is right on track and going well!
  11. Create an e-book of my recipes  I have created TWO e-books already this year!
  12. Laugh more. I have been doing a lot of this
  13. Do more yoga. I am slacking on this
  14. Work on my writing skills. I am working on this!
  15. Get all the stamps in my VT Brewers Passport Stamped
  16. Go to a driving range and hit some balls
  17. Read 10 new books. I have read 4 books and a bunch of new cookbooks
  18. Update my blog with a new fun look in the process of getting this done
  19. Eat more oatmeal.
  20. Drink more green monsters
  21. Call my girlfriends more.
  22. Get a massage* DONE
  23. Get a pedicure
  24. Get a facial (see the trend- love the self care)
  25. Final outfit our house so that it is “grownup” and organized. almost done with this!

Okay so it looks like back in August I was super ambitious about what I wanted to accomplish and a little travel crazy.  Well let’s just say we won’t be doing all that traveling listed above so I’ve already set myself out to fail at these goals (which were kind of ridiculous anyways).  So it looks like things are for the most part on track minus the traveling and there are some things that I am still working on and others that will need to wait for warmer weather- there is no way I am going on an overnight on the long trail right now!

So far here are some of the highlights of the year:
