Prenatal Fitness: Making A Splash

June 16, 2012 by Lindsay Ingalls 1 Comment

Almost all of my prenatal fitness has revolved around walking, prenatal yoga and Summer Sanders’ workout videos, that is until I finally found swimming. Back at the end of May, Neil and I went to get anniversary massages at a spa which allowed us full access to their facilities including their pool. Since we had the entire day I decided that I should pick up a pregnancy friendly bathing suit since all of pre-pregnancy ones were much too small. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money so I ended up buying one for $20 from Old Navy (non-maternity). It’s a bit big in the chest and the bottom due to the the need for it to fit around my giant baby belly but it works.

After our massages we took advantage of the pool and it was glorious! We did lap after lap sometimes jogging from end to end and other times swimming and it felt amazing. Being in the water really relieved the pressure on my hips and legs and I still got in a great workout. It felt so great that I couldn’t wait to go swimming again. Since then we have only had access to outdoor pools and the lake but have made an effort to get out and enjoy both when the weather and time allows.

We are so lucky that Neil’s work has an arrangement with a local tennis club that has an outdoor pool. We are able to use the pool throughout the week after 5pm and all day on the weekends. We went this past Monday and got a nice swim in. Swimming has easily become my new favorite pregnancy activity. I really recommend that you pregnant ladies get out there and do some swimming this summer because it feels so good and is low impact but a great workout- especially on the arms- you will be carrying around a baby soon so need to strengthen those arms of yours!

What is your favorite workout right now?

Does This Shirt Make Me Look Fast?

This morning the Hubz and I had intended on getting up early to run before heading to Montpelier to watch Allie and Caitlin’s race but after a late night out at a concert we decided that a little extra sleep was a better idea.  Once we finally rolled out of bed we headed on our way but first we made a pit stop at a new coffee shop Maglianero Cafe for a coffee. This new coffee shop is really a beautiful place and it is bike friendly.  I got a hot drip coffee and the Hubz an iced coffee- both were amazingly delicious.

After our coffee we made our way to Montpelier just in time to see Allie and Caitlin at the first start of the race.  While we waited for them to make the loop back to the finish we headed to our favorite Capitol City Farmers Market to pick up some veggies and our favorite bookstore Bear Pond Books.  Around 9:30 am we headed to the race finish line and watched as runners began to arrive and waited to cheer on Allie and Caitlin.

At the start of their run (girls in pink)

Around 43 minutes I turned to Neil and said they’ll be here in 10 minutes, that’s my guess.  Well guess what- I WAS RIGHT ON! Allie and Caitlin turned the corner at 52 minutes and some seconds and they leaped across the finish line at 53 minutes.  They were really amazing and I am so proud.

Check out the shirts the girls made for the race:

and the back of Allie’s:

After the race we headed to The Skinny Pancake for crepes and to catch up.  Neil and I both got the Vegan Monster with mushrooms and salsa and topped with our favorite hot sauce.

Following brunch we headed to the Hunger Mountain Co-op to take a look but we didn’t pick up much just a yummy chocolate bar and coconut rolled dates for the Hubz.  When we were leaving I decided to take a peak at the sign up sheet for my Sugar Blues workshop next week and guess what? It was FULL- even the wait list is full!!! Squeal! Eeek! OMG! The pressure is on!

When we finally made it back to Burlington the Hubz and I took a look at the clock and decided we better head to the gym before it closed.  Today we decided to get a 250 meter swim in as well as our run.  I haven’t been feeling great, a little congested, so todays workout wasn’t the best on top of the fact that my legs were killing me from yesterdays squats and lunges. After our run we stopped in at Healthy Living for a smoothie and coconut water as well as some organic strawberries and organic apples. The Hubz and I shared a banana-peanut butter-flax-coconut smoothie and it was delicious.

Now it’s time for dinner, The Voice, foam rolling and relaxing with a movie. What are you up to this weekend?

Gym. Market. Garden.  That has been our day!

This morning the Hubz and I downed two dates with almond butter and then headed to an early morning swim at the Y.  The hubz and I both swam tough 500 yards in the lap pool.  It has been forever since I swam laps and I forgot about how much of a work out it is!  After the Y we headed to Starbuck$ for a decaf iced coffee (to share) and we both picked up an oatmeal before heading to the first summers farmers market of the year.

After coffee and oatmeal we headed to the market where we picked up beautiful greens, purple carrots, rutabaga and some organic plants for our balcony garden.

After the market we had our community work day at our garden where we spent two hours raking and rolling out things. Crazy workout.

After our community work day we headed home for a late lunch before we headed back to our own garden plot to get to work on our plot.

Lunch- veggie burger, pop chips and beer

After lunch we headed back to the garden to get down to work and we even had a wonderful guest; my good friend Allie came for a visit with her furry friends.  We did more gardening and snacked on a Bora Bora bar.

After swimming, walking and gardening it was time for a bike shopping and date night out with the Hubz. First we went to look for new bikes for the Hubz and then to American Flatbread for beers and flatbread. Now it’s time to sit and relax and finish our movie.

What did you do today?

Giggles & Goggles

May 7, 2011 by Lindsay Ingalls 2 Comments

Good Morning!! The Hubz and I had a busy night and I didn’t get to blog after we finished our shopping trip. So lets rewind to yesterdays lunch which was leftover spicy swiss chard & lentils over quinoa which I ate about half of and an apple which I forgot to take a picture of however I’m sure you all know what an apple looks like and if you don’t google “gala apple”.

After work I headed out to pick up a mothers day gift which I am not going to reveal here because my mom reads the blog- Hey Mom! I also picked up a few plants for our balcony garden and an Honest Tea.

After shopping I picked up the Hubz from work and we headed home for the early bird special (dinner at 4:30pm) before we spent the night running around doing errands and shopping. For dinner I whipped up soba noodles with sundried tomatoes, fennel, mushrooms & garlic with a tahini sauce.

Once we fueled up we did a marathon shopping trip; first stop Fleet Feet to shop for new running shoes for the Hubz.

It was pretty interesting to watch how the guy measured your foot to figure out the right pair of shoes. He brought our two pairs of shoes for the Hubz to try and then he watched him run in them to evaluate how they worked for him. It just happened that the first pair he recommended where the ones that worked the best too; pretty talented shoe fitter. It made me realize that I should probably get fitted for my own pair of shoes since mine just feel a little off and the fact that I have had them for over a year.

We went from shoe shopping to bathing suit and goggle shopping. Since the Hubz and I are going to get a membership at the YMCA we decided that we needed goggles for the pool and were in need of swimming suits rather than sitting by the pool, I may go in to get wet bathing suits. We had a great time trying on all of the different goggles at Dick’s and both found a pair that we liked. However we did not find new swim suits, they were all awful. I did end up finding one at Kohl’s and on sale- WIN!

After goggles came …compost? Yes we headed to pick up compost and potting soil for our garden plot and balcony gardens. After that we ran a few more errands and then came home for a late second dinner of sushi and beer (yes we let ourselves have the night off from the cleanse- more on this in up coming posts).

and we watched a movie (the Hubz picked).

It was really good however we still need to finish the movie because the old man the Hubz was falling asleep.

Now we are heading out to the Y and then the market and then breakfast and then our community garden work day. AHHH! Busy day!

What’s the most recent movie you have seen? How was it?
