Hemp seeds are these crazy little things that taste amazing and are so versatile and they are incredibly nutritious. We have been eating them for years at our house so of course when Manitoba Harvest came out with their new Hemp Protein Smoothie I jumped at the opportunity to try it.
I have tried Manitoba Harvest‘s HempPro 70 in the past and I really like it for a protein to add to my smoothies when all I want is protein and omega’s. However sometimes you want a little bit of flavor and sweetener and even maybe even a few greens and that is where the new Hemp Protein Smoothies are a great option.
The Manitoba Harvest Hemp Protein Smoothie powder combines their HempPro 70 with coconut sugar <– love this because most protein powders either use cane sugar or stevia and I personally prefer coconut sugar, a greens blend which includes organic spinach, organic kale and organic broccoli and either chocolate, berry or chai flavoring. Each 30 gram serving has 15 grams of plant-based protein.
These smoothies are super easy to because you can simply mix them in your shaker cup with some of your favorite non-dairy milk perfect for a quick post workout shake or mid-day pick me up or you can add it to your blender with some non-dairy milk, frozen fruit of your choice and any other of your favorite smoothie add-ins such as coconut or chia seeds or nut butters. For me I’m all about the chocolate Hemp Protein Smoothie because I just love a chocolate peanut butter and banana smoothie – it’s basically like a healthier milk shake.
What flavor would you like to try? What’s your favorite smoothie combo?

We have been having some crazy hot days around here and when it’s 80F I really have no desire to cook or really spend any amount of time in my hot kitchen. So, whenever that happens I bring out the blender and start whipping up smoothies and shakes. This week Neil and I were all about the chocolate “[almond]milk shakes”.
Our milkshake bases always start with a heap of frozen bananas and a non-dairy milk from there we like to mix it up depending on what we have on hand or are in the mood for. This week we had a carton of Almond Breeze Almondmilk in the Hint of Honey-Vanilla flavor so that is what we used as our liquid for our shakes. We also added in some chocolate protein powder and in this particular one a chocolate peanut butter but most of the time we use almond butter.
Dairy-Free Chocolate Protein Shake
Serves 2-4 (depending on how hungry you are)
5 frozen bananas
1 scoop of your favorite chocolate protein powder or alternatively a scoop of cacao powder
1-2 heaping tablespoons of your favorite nut butter
*Tip 1: Freeze your bananas when they are super spotty because that is when they are the sweetest and easiest to digest.
**Tip 2: For a shake start with 16oz of almondmilk and add more as needed. If you are more into a smoothie/thinner consistency than start with more almond milk.
I found the Almond Breeze Almondmilk in the Hint of Honey-Vanilla to give this smoothie a subtle extra sweet taste. I tasted it on it’s own as well and it’s sweet but a much more mellow sweet – perfect for smoothies and shakes.
I love to travel and I don’t get to do it enough so instead I let my taste buds take the trip. Food is an amazing thing, it can take you anywhere in the world without even leaving the comfort of your own kitchen. With each sip of this creamy smoothie you’ll be transported to India.
The garam masala and the ginger are warming, while the dates give it a nice sweetness and the Pure Almond makes it nice and creamy. You might be thinking creamy? It just be high in fat and calories as well but with only 191 calories and 1.4 grams of fat per serving it is a wonderful healthy treat.

Being a stay-at-home-mom is more time consuming than you might imagine and finding time to eat can sometimes be a challenge. Lately I have been turning to quick and easy meals that take a matter of minutes to put together and a huge bonus if I can eat and nurse at the same time. Lately my go to meal for both breakfast and lunch has been a chocolate Vega Energizing Smoothie.
You can just take the smoothie powder and shake and go but I love to blend mine with a few other ingredients to bulk it up and make a real meal.
Place everything in a blender and blend until smooth.
I love to add the ice to the smoothie because it make is more like a chocolate milkshake which makes it super indulgent. This is the basic recipe the I use but I often add some frozen fruit instead of the ice when I have it on hand such as blueberries or raspberries and if you have frozen banana you could use that as well.
What is your go to shake or smoothie?
What is your favorite meals when you only have a few minutes to put something together?
When we were on vacation in Rhode Island we visited Wildflour Bakery and they had a smoothie on their menu that included granola. Neil and I were both intrigued and if we had made one more visit we probably would have tried it but instead we shared a green smoothie.
When I arrived home I remembered I had a few sample packets of Blissful Eats granola so I decided to make my own version of Wildflour’s breakfast smoothie.
This morning I just wasn’t feeling solid foods, warm foods, heavy foods, ect. However something cold sounded good, especially in this ridiculously hot weather (it has been over 90F in VT this week). So I decided to make a smoothie filled with the things I love.
Melon from our CSA, unsweetened Hemp Milk, Chia Seeds and Raw Almond Butter
I really love to add chia seeds to smoothies because it adds omega-3’s and are loaded with antioxidants, calcium, protein, fiber, and vitamins including calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, niacin, and zinc. They really help to bulk up my smoothie. Buy Now
I also add the raw almond butter to bulk up this simple smoothie since I am having it for breakfast and want it to fill me until lunch. This raw almond butter is great because it is silky smooth and just nice a creamy with a sweetness you don’t get from regular almond butter which generally is made from roasted almonds. Also just a reminder that this almond butter is available in my OpenSky shop and until September 7, 2010 for every jar purchased $1 will be donated to The Lunch Box Project and I will make a donation for every jar sold as well. Oh and of course the Hubz and I drank ours out of our GlassDharma straws- decorative dots for me (Buy Now) and simple elegant for the Hubz. (Buy Now) I love these straws and am so glad I was finally able to try them – I will have a mini interview coming at you next week from the crew at GlassDharma- so keep your eyes peeled!
Yesterday after work I wasn’t feeling great so I just spent the afternoon relaxing on the couch with the fur baby. I wasn’t really feeling up to solid foods but was hungry so I decided to make myself a smoothie. In the smoothie I had original 1 cup unsweetened hemp milk, 1/4 of a cantaloupe, 1/2 banana and about 1 cup of frozen mango.
It was so cool and refreshing I think it is my new smoothie love. I also tried out my new GlassDharma straw which I absolutely love! It as a little weird to drink our of at first but I really like it. Above is just one of the straws I have and I can’t wait to show you the others! Not only are these straws pretty but they are sustainable, dishwasher safe, kid friendly and they have a life time guarantee; you can’t beat that! Also at first I was like how am I supposed to clean this thing? Well GlassDharma includes a cleaning brush which makes things so much easier because otherwise I would have had a hard time getting that smoothie residue out of the straw. They are also part of my new OpenSky Shop where right now until August 16th you can save 25% of your total purchase when you use coupon code EXCITE25; this a one time use only so make sure to check out other items on my OpenSky shop as well as others shops before checking out!
Finally dinner time rolled around and I knew the Hubz would not be down for a liquid dinner so I decided to use up some veggies and rice that was in the fridge and make bean and rice burgers. This is one of my favorite things to make when I have left over grains, veggies and beans in the pantry. I also love how easy it is to make these because there is very little work that I have to do; I just stick everything except the spices, condiments and rice into the food processor and pulse. In last nights mix there was: 1/2 parsley, 10 olives, 1 carrot, 1/2 onion and 1 can of drained and rinsed white beans all tossed into the food processor.
Pulse everything until it is pretty well combined but there are still some small chunks.
Once the mixture has reached the right consistency dump it into a bowl and start adding the remaining ingredients: 1 cup of cooked rice or grain (I only had white rice; need to restock the pantry), 1/4 cup nutritional yeast, 1t salt, 1/2t black pepper, 1t chili flakes (optional), 1t paprika, 1 heaping tablespoon each of dijon mustard and tomato ketchup, 1/2 tablespoon hot sauce and 1t garlic powder.
Mix to combine all of the ingredients and then scoop out onto a parchment lined baking sheet and place in a 425F oven for 23-27 minutes, flipping part way through. I then topped mine with a little BBQ sauce and served it up with roasted broccoli.
I get this question a lot of time from friends and family: “I really want a food processor however they are a lot of money, do you have any suggestions for a lower cost one?” YES! I do have a great suggestion! I have always wanted wanted a really nice Cuisinart 14 cup food processor, however these are around $200+ and just not in my budget at this time. I one day was checking out reviews online for lower end food processors and came across the Black & Decker Quick & Easy and decided that the price was right and that I would get one. I have now had mine for a few years and I love it! I can make hummus, dips, veggie burgers, cookies and baked goods, and my favorite banana ice cream in it with no problem. When I was looking through OpenSky to see what items that I love and use in the kitchen I was excited to see that they actually had this food processor so now you can have it too!
For now I am going to be glad I have a good food processor that works but I still am dreaming of the day when I will come home to a nice big Cuisinart food processor.
