Menu Planning Troubles

March 19, 2011 by Lindsay Ingalls 5 Comments

The newest Cookbook Club starts tomorrow- we will be reviewing Skinny Bitch Ultimate Everyday Cookbook. I ordered my book from Amazon the other day and received my copy yesterday and was so excited to get down to menu planning for the next few weeks, however my excitement turned into shock and disappointment.  As I flipped through the cookbook I came to see that most of the recipes are centered around oil/Earth balance, faux cheese and SUGAR! The most appalling thing for me was how much sugar is used in many of the recipes I really just can’t believe it and on top of that they list the nutritional value for each serving of the recipes but don’t include sugar which is just strange to me- they include calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, protein, fiber and carbs but not sugar- why not sugar because you probably wouldn’t buy this book if you saw how much they use?

Maybe I’m being a little too quick to judge this cookbook since I haven’t made any of the recipes yet so I am going to spend the next few weeks testing out the recipes and letting them speak for themselves.  However, there are a few recipes that sound really good but are just not healthy (or at least healthy enough) for me that I will be making modifications of.  So after two hours of reviewing the cookbook and planning my menu here are the next two weeks:

Have you tried out this cookbook yet? What are you thoughts? Have the book and want to test it out with us?- send me an email and I’ll add you to the review list!

Book Reviews: Skinny Bitch

The Winner is lucky number 8: Congrats Emma!

My first impression of Skinny Bitch was that the name was just really not appealing as my husband and I are not ones to use the term “bitch” and I find it has just a negative feeling.  I decided to over look this and give the book a chance since everyone has been reading it.  I must say that the book has a lot of great information.  It is just as it says on the cover “a no-nonsense, tough-love guide” and that is exactly what it is.  The book is filled with important information about the foods people eat from animal products, sweeteners and coffee.  However if you are easily offended this may not be the book for you.

Following the release of Skinny Bitch a new book came out Skinny Bitch In the Kitch . This book is filled with a variety of recipes for the girl (or guy) who wants to be a skinny bitch (or bastard). The recipes are all vegan and are easy yummy recipes for anyone- you can check out some of the sample recipes on the Skinny Bitch website.

Rory and Kim came up with some kick-ass recipes for every craving there is:

  • Bitchin’ Breakfasts
  • PMS (Pissy Mood Snacks)
  • Sassy Soups and Stews
  • Down Home Cookin’
  • Grown-Up Appetizers
  • Happy Endings (Desserts)

Lastly, my favorite SB book is Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven a “no-nonsense guide for pregnant gals”.  This book is great for any pregnant mom to be and especially those who are vegan or vegetarian.  For many vegan and vegetarian women there is a concern about eating properly during pregnancy and this book can help get you on the right track and give you great ideas. The book starts out much like the first SB book and then adds in things that are important for pregnant gals to know.

I received a copy of this book for review however I already own it myself so I am giving you a chance to win a copy of Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven.  If you would like to win a copy of this book you can:

1. Leave me a comment letting me know why you’d like to win this book.

Review- Skinny Bitch Boot Camp

The Skinny Bitch series has been either loved or hated but you have to admit the name just draws you to read their books and although they are harsh and a bit much at times the message is practical.  Now after a number of books the Skinny Bitch girls have come out with a few workout videos, one of which is Skinny Bitch Boot Camp.  I was curious to find out what it was like as well as in need of getting into a more active routine so I said what the heck I will buy and and give it a try.

Now this isn’t your traditional workout video: 1. Rory and Kim are not always on the same page- one seems to keep going and the other is ready to move on which is distracting and a little irritating. 2. the jargon used is not that of a traditional workout video and is a little much at times discussing using vibrators as weights and slapping each others asses. 3. lastly I would like to note my irritation on how there is little direction as to how to do the boot camp routine and that at times the camera doesn’t even focus on what they are doing instead it is showing their heads rather than the entire body so you have to guess at what they are doing.

Okay- so overall the video just sucks based on it’s professionalism (for a lack of a better word) as well as the basic organization and filming was awful. However- with all that said my legs are killing me and my ass is getting tighter so even though the video is at best mediocre the work out is great.
