Review: Zevia

August 10, 2009 by Lindsay Ingalls Leave a Comment

ZEVIAI was lucky enough to get a sample of Zevia’s 6 flavors the other day and my husband and I quickly tried them all.  The flavors included: root beer, ginger, lemon lime, black cherry, orange and cola.  I loved the root beer it was so good, better than most root beers that I have had.  What I also liked about it was that you couldn’t even tell it was made with stevia.  I find that stevia can have a very strong taste at times but in this it was very mild which I enjoyed.  My husband had the cola because I can’t have caffine and as an former colaholic he really loved it and likes it better then most any other cola that is stevia free.  Now I didn’t love the black cherry or orange flavors but I’ve never been a fan of either flavor in regular pop so others might enjoy it- I know my dad likes the orange.

Lemon lime is my favourite and is so refreshing I just love it.  If I could drink gin right now it would go very nice with it. Lastly the Ginger- this was nice a refreshing, not to over powering but had a good real ginger flavour unlike those other ginger flavoured pops.

Overall I love Zevia and think it’s a great alternative to diet pop.

Grasshopper

090512-blondie-benatar

So my hubz and I went Boston to see Blondie, Pat Benatar and to our surprise The Donna’s who opened for them. We sent the afternoon lounging at our hotel pool and then decided that it was getting late and we should get ready to head out. At this point we were pretty hungry even though we had a big lunch at Le’s in Cambridge earlier. We decided that becaues of time we would go try Grasshopper again see if it would be better than the last time (last time we went back in October it was awful-well the dishes we ordered were anyways). So we tried it again and got the appetizer platter which was really good- we didn’t love the dumplings but everything else was really good. We also had the “No Name” which was really good but of course awful for you but still good and lots of it. We ended up taking half of it with us and ate it in the hotel room after the show. So Grasshopper you’ve redeemed yourself and we will be back.

Review: Justin's Nut Butter

August 5, 2009 by Lindsay Ingalls 6 Comments

picture-1

I received a jar of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter along with a few small packages of various flavours of almond butter and peanut butter. I immediately cracked the jar open and had a big scoop with an apple.  This almond butter is one of the best I have ever had.  You’d think with the maple it might be too sweet like I find the PB&Co. Mighty Maple Peanut Butter but it was a perfect balance of sweet and nutty. I have now had it on apples, toast and a big scoop on a spoon and it sure is good I’m looking forward to trying the other flavour samples that I received – but I am saving them for our cruise so I have a little stash of yummy nut butter to have instead of the sweet sugary preservative filled peanut butter I imagine will be on the cruise.

I heart Kale

August 3, 2009 by Lindsay Ingalls 7 Comments

Last night was all about kale-

I made kale chips which are extremely easy and yummy to make. Just take some dinosaur kale and toss with shoyu, olive oil, garlic powder and onion powder and dehydrate at 115 for 4-6 hours.

Then I made some kale and white bean soup sooooo goood:
2 cans of canellni beans
4 cups vegetable broth
4 cups of kale cut into bite sized pieces
2 carrots diced
4 celery stalks diced
1 medium onion diced
2 heading tablespoons of nutritional yeast
salt and pepper to taste

I sautee the onions, carrots and celery with a little oil until soft. Add in one can of beans and mash up this will thicken the soup. Then toss in the kale and stir everything together. Add the broth and other can of beans and bring to a boil and then turn down to a simmer for 15min. Add the nutritioinal yeast and salt and pepper to taste. then gobble it up.

California TLTs

July 31, 2009 by Lindsay Ingalls Leave a Comment

Tonight we are having some yummy California TLTs because I am craving avocado and we have lots of tempeh to use.

California TLTs:

Ingredients
6 slices of tempeh bacon
4 slices good white bread, cut 1/2-inch thick
4 tablespoons reduced fat vegenaise
4 to 8 tender green lettuce leaves, washed and spun very dry
1 ripe Hass avocado
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 large ripe tomato, sliced 1/2-inch thick
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Place a baking wire rack on a sheet pan and arrange the tempeh bacon on the rack in a single layer. Bake for 15 to 25 minutes, until the tempeh is browned and crisp.
Place the bread slices on a sheet pan and toast them for 5 minutes. Turn the slices and toast for 1 more minute, until all the bread is evenly browned. Place 2 slices on a cutting board. Spread each slice with about 1 tablespoon of vegenaise. Cover the slices with a layer of lettuce. Peel the avocado and slice it 1/2-inch thick. Toss the avocado slices gently with the lemon juice, and arrange on top of the lettuce leaves. Place 3 slices of tempeh on top of each sandwich and then add a layer of tomato slices on top of the tempeh. Sprinkle liberally with salt and pepper.

Spread each of the remaining 2 slices of toasted bread with 1 tablespoon of vegenaise and place, vegenaise side down, on the sandwiches. Cut in half and serve.
